Why Is My Paint Bubbling? Causes and Fixes
Paint bubbles — small blisters in the paint film — are your paint telling you something failed underneath. Here's how to read the message and fix it for good.
Moisture: the #1 cause
Water getting behind the paint film is the most common culprit — roof leaks, plumbing leaks, bathroom steam without ventilation, or exterior water intrusion. The fix starts with eliminating the moisture source; repainting over active moisture just makes new bubbles.
Heat and application issues
Paint applied in direct hot sun or onto a hot surface can skin over before solvents escape, trapping bubbles. Similarly, painting over a damp or dirty surface prevents adhesion and invites blistering.
Incompatible products
Oil over latex without proper prep (or vice versa), or painting over glossy surfaces without deglossing/bonding primer, causes adhesion failure that shows as bubbling or peeling.
The proper fix
Find and fix the cause first. Then scrape bubbles back to sound paint, sand smooth, spot-prime bare areas, and repaint. For moisture-caused bubbling, verify the area stays dry before repainting — otherwise you're just resetting the timer.
