Painting Vinyl Siding: Dos and Don'ts
Replacing vinyl siding is expensive; painting it costs a fraction and looks great when done right. But vinyl has specific requirements that differ from wood or fiber cement.
The color rule
Never paint vinyl a color darker than the original (unless using vinyl-safe formulations). Dark colors absorb heat, and vinyl expands significantly — too-dark paint can cause warping. Vinyl-safe paints in lighter or similar tones are the safe path.
Prep for vinyl
Wash thoroughly — vinyl chalks and collects grime. No scraping needed (nothing to scrape), but mildew treatment matters on shaded Chicago exposures. That's most of the prep; vinyl is actually easy to prepare.
Products and application
Use 100% acrylic exterior paint formulated for vinyl (many major brands label vinyl-safe lines). Spray application gives the most uniform finish on siding's texture; back-rolling or brushing works too. Two coats for durability.
Expectations
A quality vinyl paint job lasts 7–10 years in our climate. It won't fix warped or cracked siding — replace damaged pieces first. And remember the color rule: it's about physics, not preference.
